T20 World Cup: Hardik Pandya bowls in the nets ahead of India vs New Zealand Super 12 clash

All-rounder Hardik Pandya’s inability to bowl due to his recurring back injury has hampered the balance of the Indian team in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2021.

India all-rounder Hardik Pandya started bowling in the nets on Wednesday ahead of the team’s Super 12 clash against New Zealand in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021. Hardik rolled his arm over for a short span of time before switching to batting in the training session in Dubai.

Visuals of Pandya bowling in the nets along with Shardul Thakur and Bhuvneshwar Kumar were shown on air just before the match between Scotland and Namibia began in Abu Dhabi.

India had no sixth-bowling option in their opening game against Pakistan on Sunday as Pandya was not fit enough to bowl. The Men in Blue lost the game by 10 wickets to suffer their first World Cup defeat against Pakistan.

Pandya’s inability to bowl due to his recurring back injury has hampered the balance of the Indian T20I side and calls have been growing louder for the team management to look at other all-round options.

India have a like-for-like replacement waiting in Shardul Thakur but they have preferred to play Pandya just as a batsman rather than the fast-bowling all-rounder who has been in good form.

It is still not clear as to whether Pandya will be able to bowl in a match for India just yet or whether he will be picked for the October 31 game against New Zealand or not.

Pandya last bowled for India in a T20I match against Sri Lanka in July but didn’t roll his arm over for the Mumbai Indians during IPL 2021 in the UAE.

“In terms of his (Hardik) bowling, the physios, trainers are working. He hasn’t bowled a single ball yet. We wanted to take one match at a time and see where he stands,” his MI captain Rohit Sharma had said after the team crashed out in the league stage this season.

The game against New Zealand on Sunday will be crucial for Team India’s campaign as a defeat will make it difficult for Virat Kohli’s side to qualify for the semifinals. Notably, India are yet to defeat the Blackcaps in T20 World Cup.
